ADVANCED STRUCTURES
Paperback & Kindle (Light grey cover)
FOREWORD
This book is the result of thirty-years’ teaching-experience at this
level, in the past called Advanced
and now, in Europe, Level C of the Common
European Framework for Languages, whose program it follows.
It is in response to all the doubts and misconceptions
that students have presented in class at the
state language centre called Escuela Oficiales de Idiomas, Málaga, Spain.
In its development, the book has been directed to
adults from different walks in life, although mainly to Spanish teachers, not
only of English but of different subjects, and, to a lesser degree, to
foreigners, mostly from France and Eastern Europe.
The goal is to present the most important grammar
points of the level in a very colloquial and simple way, by means of questions
and answers, so that it can be easily followed by adults from other fields.
Each unit contains
- explanations introduced through the most common questions asked in class.
- advice on register, that is, where, when and in what sort of text the structure in question should be used, which is of the utmost importance, not only to pass exams but also to avoid being rude and/or sounding ridiculous
- tables to make the structure studied visually clear.
- many examples from the classroom, with brief explanations.
- equivalent structures in Spanish for comparison (no translations),
- exercises (recognition, structural transformation, rewriting, etc.)
- key to all the exercises, with brief explanatory notes where necessary.
- a glossary with definitions and examples of those terms impossible to avoid.
Having command of a language is more than being able to communicate
i.e. knowing what to say or write; having command of a language is to know how
to say or write it according to the when
and the where
of a particular situation. With this in mind, we hope this book will be
of use to you in acquiring greater competence and confidence in how you write
and speak English.
