ADDITION

“apart from” – “not only” – "besides"

This does not intend to be an exhaustive list of "addition" elements.

A Compare these sentences:

1. He was not only irritable but also unpleasant. 
2. Apart from being irritable, he was unpleasant. 
3. Besides his native tongue, he spoke 27 more languages. 
4. The governor was not only accused of embezzlement but of prevarication as well.
5. Apart from swimming and running he also did pole vaulting.
6.  Besides being a chemistry teacher, she's an outstanding artists.
7. HIs books were not only best sellers, but they were considered original as well. 
8.  He was complaining not only of the measures taken but also of the way they were applie

NOTICE the class of word that follows each of these addition elements. Apart from and besides being prepositions will be followed by noun or ing verb; not only being an adverb will be followed by an adjective or a verb in a non-finite form (-ing/ed). Especially for the latter there are other posibilities, but they imply changes in the whole structure.
