a) Examples
From less formal to more formal.
1, 2, 3 & 4 are the ones more usually used in speaking, while the rest are more commonly used in written language, unless you’re in a formal situation and therefore need to address your listeners in a formal register, e.g. when you give a lecture, or explain something at courts, etc.

 1.        for example: There is a similar word in many languages, for example in French and Italian.

 2.        like: Anti-utopian novels like ‘Animal Farm’ and ‘1984’.

 3.        such as: Wild flowers such as primroses are becoming rare.

 4.        for instance: Let your children make their own decisions sometimes. For instance, let them choose which clothes to wear.

 5.        to illustrate: To illustrate my point, let me tell you a little story. After all this theory, to illustrate my lecture, I will say that….

 6.        as an illustration: I use this case as an illustration of the problems we are facing at this police station.

 7.        by way of illustration: Let me, by way of illustration, quote from one of her poems.

 8.        e.g. (exempli gratia: Latin): Popular pets, e.g. cats and dogs, are not admitted in this building.
